Telecommuting has a hidden risk

Around five years ago I switched from an occasional day working at home to an occasional day in the office.  It was a good time to make the move, as we (that is, myself and my UK based team mates) were soon to be moved out of old offices to new ones that were much further away, MrsB was pregnant and all in all, it was simply more convenient all round to reduce our office time.
Over those years, I've slowly gained weight; not a huge amount, but enough for me to notice and try to do something about it.  It's not until now that I'd given much thought to how telecommuting has such as effect upon how inactive I have become.
On Monday I picked up a copy of 'Walk with me' for the Nintendo DS.  The kit includes a sensor pack (a pedometer of sorts) and it measures your steps, and importantly, when you take them.
The blurb out there says 5000 steps each day is a good figure to aim for; 'Walk with me' (hereafter referred to as 'WWM') suggests an easy starting target of 3000 steps, which can be revised at any time.
Yesterday was my office day and co-incided nicely with the first full days use of the WWM sensor.  By 2.30pm I'd reached the target, and at the end of the day, reached a grand total of 4999 steps.
Today, a 'usual' day working at home, and by 1.30pm I've covered only 1000 steps.

I always knew that being a geek meant I'd be desk based and therefore I'd be sedentary for much of the day.  I've only now realised quite many steps are taken whilst working in the office and conversely how few are taken whilst working at home.  I don't particularly want to increase my office days (although I may soon be forced to), but I am now wary that I need to 'do' more during the day and be rather more active overall.

On the fun side, after connecting to Nintendo WiFi Connection, it seems I'm ranked number one by birth month on the WWM stats; I doubt it'll stay that way for long!
